Featuring a collage of music and his experimental surrealist poetry, the unique mix of sounds and poetry worked in a way that seemed to distill poetry down to what Nietzsche refers to as the Dionysian, a ritualistic and emotional form of art connected to feelings of chaos. I found myself standing still for 30 minutes, enthralled by Öyvind Fahlström’s sound collage Birds in Sweden. The exhibition does not focus on a single medium, instead displaying how surrealism encompasses all forms of art, including photography, poetry, painting and readymade objects. The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Surrealism: Beyond Borders, highlights the vastly expansive network and growth of surrealism beyond Saint-Germain-des-Prés and Paris to the rest of the world: an artistic movement that continues to permeate society and act in rebellion to art, government and reality itself. Proof of the movement’s influence can be found no further than the fact that the word has entered common vocabulary, known both by those familiar with the work of the original Paris Surrealist Group and those who have no knowledge of Salvador Dalí and André Breton. There is no art - no painting, no photography, no poetry - that affects me as profoundly as surrealism.
